SALT & SALMONIDS

A Modest Angler's Experiences

You don't get to my age without picking up a few things along the way; an extremely patient family*, a distressing complex about the size of your ears, debts...that sort of thing. But as a self-deprecating angler with an obscenely optimistic streak, you also pick up stories, emotional scars and just a smidgeon of actually useful knowledge. And the odd fish too, of course.

* PS. The family are mine. I didn't just find them at a bus station.

Home: Welcome

Quest for a King (Kingfish on the fly, that is...)

Kingfish on the fly - an opportunity to target these impressive gamefish on the fly whilst visiting my daughter in NZ was just irresistible!

Life On The Edge

There may be no need to stress about how far out to sea you can throw a fly... Look for life on the edge - what you find may amaze you!

Portuguese Pescaria

Portugal doesn't seem to feature as a worthy saltwater flyfishing destination...it should!

Go With The Flow!

If you're new to saltwater flyfishing, knowing quite literally where to start is the big question!

Mullet flies - Wake me up before you go-glo

Mullet seem to see red when you throw a fly at them... but will they also see day-glo chartreuse?

Tipping the Scales

Don’t pass up the small river - There’s remarkable sport to be had, lessons to be learned and a whole new set of skills to master.

Matt Powell, Wales' Guiding Gourmet Chef

Welsh bass fishing guide Matt Powell will put you on the fish...but he can also take you on a unique and fabulous culinary journey too!

The Lazy Mullet

Want more mullet on the fly? Think Lazy - a guide to understanding mullet feeding.

Take A Better Fishy Photo!

If you’re a master of the headless portrait, the blurred 'grip-n-grin', here're some tips for a better fishy photo!

Cuba's Cayo Cornucopia

the consequence of so few boats plying the waters of Cuba for so many decades? Well, for the visiting angler, the fishing is utterly epic!

The Last Gasp

Ten minutes in, another brutal take, and this was undeniably...unbelievably...bigger! This was an out and out wrestling match

Change is good...The evolving shrimp

Mulleteers (as we call ourselves) tend to lean towards sharing our pain. And our successes too - a big part of which are our fly patterns.

And now for something completely different...

All around, the trout, both rainbows and browns, were frantically hitting the mays as they played a deadly dangerous game of chicken...

Joe & The Coho

As Pacific salmon species go, this is the one with serious anger management issues that tends to go off like a small thermonuclear device...

The Great (Sushi) Escape

"this was a challenge that put fighting a nuclear-powered 60lb Chinook on an 8wt rod on a footing with scooping leaves out of a pond..."

The Lob Of Faith

I couldn’t quite believe what I was being told to do, especially as the Javelin had never been a strong track & field event for me at school

Cuba Libre

I struck into a fish which turned out to be a 2-3lb jack, but as I started to retrieve the line, a 7ft shark suddenly burst onto the scene

Jog-on...

The little girl, sitting on her father’s shoulders had her hand to her mouth. I distinctly heard the words “Daddy…will the fishy be OK?”

Venture to Fuerteventura

it was Fuerteventura’s stunning, silver-blue, jet black-finned Palometa that gave me a flyfishing fun experience to rival any tropical flats
